When you look at this picture would you be able to guess who has an ostomy?
Nope, it’s not my elderly Grandfather. Try again. Nope, it’s not my Grandmother who is fighting cancer in this picture. The person with the ostomy is me, the 30-year-old (at the time of the pic) woman in the green shirt in the middle. I look “normal” right? You would never guess I have an ostomy unless I told you. Some people still don’t believe me when I tell them I have one because of the stereotypes surrounding ostomy’s.
Having an ostomy means your disabled. Umm NO! If anything, my ostomy has given me back my life. Without it I would be dead. Without it I wouldn’t be able to chauffer my son around to all his activities or coach his hockey team.
You can’t play sports with an ostomy. I have always been involved in sports from a young age. I played on soccer, softball and hockey teams. I don’t play organized sports now just because I’m too busy but I do coach and enjoy playing hockey for fun. In the summer I enjoy boating and riding our families jet ski. You can play sports with an ostomy!
You can’t drink alcohol with an ostomy! Yes, you can if your responsible and make sure to drink some water between drinks to help with dehydration.
You can’t be intimate or attractive with an ostomy. My husband will tell you this is absolutely not true! We have had no problems in the bedroom!!
You can’t fly with an ostomy because the pressure will build and cause it to explode. Nope, not true. I flew recently and besides a quick pat down (over my clothes) from TSA, I had no issues flying in an airplane.
It will leak constantly! Leaks will happen, that is true I’m not going to lie. However, once you find the right combo of products that works best for you, leaks will be far and few between.
You’re going to have it reversed right? You must want to get rid of it as soon as possible? First off, I have Crohn’s disease and my entire colon was removed so no, reversal is not an option for me. That being said, even if I could have it reversed I wouldn’t. I never want to go back to the life
I was attempting to live before my surgery. I know not everyone feels that same way but I was so sick and I never want to go back to that again!
So, what I’m here to say is that I don’t smell, I’m not old, and I don’t have cancer. I am not disabled, and I can attempt to do any physical activity I want to, including swimming. I can responsibly drink alcohol and be intimate. I am attractive and you can’t see my ostomy under my “regular” wardrobe. I will have my ostomy for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t change that for all the money in the world!
